SECTION 2 CHALLENGE LEGALITY OF IEC NATIONWIDE VOTER REGISTRATION EXERCISE

Maseru, Nov. 26 — Advocates for the Supremacy of the Constitution, popularly known as SECTION 2, has raised serious concerns over the legality of the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) nationwide voter re-registration exercise.

The IEC is currently requiring all Basotho to re-register for inclusion in what will effectively become a new General Electors’ Register.

This means that individuals who fail to re-register may be excluded from voting in the next elections, even if they were previously registered.

SECTION 2 says while it supports efforts to keep the voters’ roll accurate and credible, those efforts must be consistent with the Constitution and the National Assembly Electoral Act.
