UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR PAYS COUTERSY CALL ON INFORMATION MINISTER

Maseru, April, 01 — The newly appointed United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Ms. Residen Taija, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), Ms. Nthati Moorosi, on Wednesday.

Welcoming the Resident Coordinator, Minister Moorosi highlighted that the longstanding partnership between Lesotho and the UN continues to yield positive results, particularly in the digitisation of schools.

She cited the Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) UNIPOD initiative as one of the success stories, noting that it has significantly contributed to improving academic excellence at the institution and among students.

The Minister further indicated that, in collaboration with the UN, government is undertaking the digitisation of Cabinet processes to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery.

She also informed the Resident Coordinator that broadcast journalists in the country are benefiting from UN-supported training programmes aimed at strengthening their professional capacity.

Additionally, Minister Moorosi explained that efforts to extend digitisation to rural communities include the deployment of digital ambassadors across local councils. These ambassadors assist communities in acquiring internet access, computer literacy and related skills to accelerate development.

Speaking at the same occasion, Ms. Taija emphasised that no one should be left behind in the digital transformation process, assuring that the UN system will continue to support government initiatives in this area.

She further underscored the importance of exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool to address youth unemployment, noting its growing relevance globally.

Ms. Taija also pointed out that Lesotho holds significant potential in sectors such as tourism, energy and human development, adding that the UN partnership will continue to explore opportunities in these areas.

The new Resident Coordinator assumes her position following the departure of her predecessor, Ms. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, who left Lesotho last month.
