Maseru, Oct. 31 — In the midst of growing unemployment in Lesotho, a group of determined young men have turned the streets of Maseru into their workplace, offering on-the-spot photography services to passersby. Many of them are graduates from higher learning institutions, particularly Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT), who say this initiative is far better than sitting idle at home.
One of them, Teboho Makhothi, shared that after realising the difficulty of finding employment after graduation, he decided to invest in himself. “I used my 4th-year lump sum to buy the camera I’m currently using,” he said, adding that “half a loaf is better than no bread.” Makhothi mentioned that earnings vary depending on the time of the month, with month-end days bringing better business as people have more disposable income.
Joining Makhothi are Thato Pheko and Kamohelo Seotsanyana, who share similar stories of perseverance. Pheko, a graduate in Digital Media, said he found street photography both a passion and a practical survival strategy. “We may not have formal jobs, but at least we are using our skills and creativity to make a living,” he said…
