Mafeteng, Aug. 14 — Motorists in Mafeteng have raised concerns over tractors operating on public roads without proper lights and reflectors, warning that the practice could increase the risk of road accidents during the summer planting season.
Speaking to the Agency on condition of anonymity, a motorist said tractors travelling without lights or reflective markings posed a danger to other road users, particularly during periods of reduced visibility.
He said a tractor recently collided with a Toyota Hilux 4×4 at Ha-Lumisi, alleging that the lack of lights and reflective markings made it difficult for other motorists to see the tractor clearly when it moved into the opposite lane in the evening.
The motorist said the incident had raised further concern as farmers were expected to use tractors and trailers more frequently during the summer planting season.
He said motorists could remain vigilant, but the safety risk would persist if tractors continued to operate on public roads without proper lighting and reflective equipment.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Ramasila Monokoane of the Traffic Department said tractors were considered vehicles when operating on public roads and were therefore required to comply with road traffic regulations.
He confirmed that the department was aware of the Ha-Lumisi accident and expressed concern over the incident.
Sergeant Monokoane stressed that tractors and trailers should be fitted with proper lights and reflectors to promote safe movement on public roads, particularly during late hours.
He said the Traffic Department had attended village gatherings to sensitise farmers on the importance of fitting tractors with proper lights and reflectors.
However, he said officers sometimes faced resistance from farmers who argued that tractors only crossed roads and therefore did not require such equipment.
Sergeant Monokoane urged farmers to prioritise road safety, saying preventive measures were better than having to regret an accident.
Tractors and trailers are increasingly used during planting and harvesting seasons and often share public roads with other vehicles. Proper lighting and reflective markings help motorists identify slow-moving agricultural machinery, particularly when visibility is reduced.
