Berea, Sept — Learners and residents of Khafung are facing access challenges four years after a bridge collapsed at Ha-Mahleke, with no intervention or assistance received to address the situation.
Speaking in an interview with the Agency, Tšiame Electoral Division (ED) councilor Mr Mokone Raliengoane said learners from Khafung have to attend high school in Malimong as there is no nearby high school in their area.
He said learners are forced to cross through water to get to school, particularly on rainy days, resulting in some missing classes.
Mr Raliengoane said the situation is concerning when examinations are underway, as missing lessons may negatively affect learners’ academic performance.
He stressed that the challenge is not limited to learners, saying community members also use the crossing when attending funerals, church services and other activities in Malimong.
Mr Raliengoane further identified poor road conditions at Ha-Mahleke as another challenge, saying vehicles can no longer reach the area easily.
He appealed to relevant authorities to improve the infrastructure to ease movement for learners and the wider community.
Tšiame ED is found in Khafung Constituency in Berea District, where communities rely on road networks to access essential services. The bridge at Ha-Mahleke links Khafung with Malimong Constituency.
