Berea, June 16 — As the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) 2026 World Cup games gain momentum, Cape Verde has taken the world by surprise by playing a goalless draw with Spain on Monday at Atlanta Stadium.
The drama unfolded during the entire 90 minutes of the match, where the history of Cape Verde Island was made during its first participation in such the world’s biggest soccer tournament.
Regardless of going to the match being the favorites, Spain, also being ranked number three in FIFA rankings, failed on several attempts to find the back of the net against a Cape Verde side ranked at number 64.
During the heated and action packed match, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha (40) also known as Josimar Dias was hailed the hero and got awarded man of the man after denying Spain some clear goal scoring opportunities.
Vozinha who plays for Chaves in Portugal second division league side, during the post match interview gave credit to all his teammates, citing that their stunning performance is a result of hard work and they have finally made their dream come true.
He continued to say that most people believed that they came to the World Cup just to enjoy the games, but he reaffirmed that they are here to compete and to fight for their country.
After showing such amazing performance, both Spain and Cape Verde have secured a point each team in group H.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay which are also pitted in the same group H, both played a 1-1 draw and thus also earning a point each team.
On the other hand as the World Cup progresses, among the surprises which sparked the global attention particularly in the group F, includes the Tunisian Head Coach Sabri Lamouch who was shown the door with an immediate effect after the northern African giants suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss against Sweden.
The soccer governing body of Tunisia Football Federation has engaged the Technical Director, Mr. Mondher Kebaier as an interim coach to guide the team for the remaining games.
The FIFA 2026 World Cup games are co-hosted by three countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States.
