TEYATEYANENG VOCATIONAL SCHOOL EQUIPS STUDENTS WITH SKILLS

Berea, Feb.12 — Khotsong Skills Training Centre has enrolled 92 students this year across four vocational departments, despite ongoing challenges related to insufficient machinery required for practical training.

During an interview with the Agency on Thursday, the school principal, Mr. Tšepo Letuka stated that there is machinery available however, it is inadequate for practical purposes and cannot fully accommodate all enrolled students.

Mr. Letuka explained that, due to the shortage of equipment, the school has been compelled to adopt improvisational methods by dividing students into groups, with certain tools shared among five learners at a time.

He noted that this arrangement may restrict active participation among students since not all of them participate actively when working in groups.

He further emphasized that instructors ensure that each student has the opportunity to operate the machines, although the process is time-consuming.

Mr. Letuka also mentioned that each programme spans one year and is followed by a mandatory three-month internship, through which students are placed in workplaces to gain practical experience.

He added that the internship component has enhanced students’ employment prospects, as many are employed by companies where they undertake attachments.

“Some graduates secure employment in South Africa, while others establish their own businesses, thereby creating employment opportunities.” Mr. Letuka said.

In spite of the equipment limitations, the centre continues to deliver vocational training aimed at equipping young individuals with practical skills that improve employability and foster entrepreneurship.
