Berea, June 05 — Residents of Ha Senekane have on Friday gathered to celebrate the handover of a new telecommunications tower and a modern kitchen at Senekane Primary School, marking a significant step towards improving education and community development.
Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the School Board Mr. Rethabile Moabi described the projects as a major investment in the area’s infrastructure.
Mr. Moabi said the telecommunications tower would improve communication among residents and connect the community to the rest of the world.
“We can now send messages easily and connect to the world,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer of Econet Telecom Lesotho, Mr. Dennis Plaatjies, said development initiatives should directly benefit communities.
He noted that the new tower would improve network coverage for residents, businesses and public institutions, providing easier access to information, digital services and mobile money.
He said the project would help bridge the gap between rural communities and the wider economy by improving connectivity and access to essential services.
Mr. Plaatjies also warned against vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure and network fraud.
He urged community members to work closely with the police to protect the tower and ensure its long-term benefits.
He further encouraged parents and teachers to guide children on responsible internet use while safeguarding the investment for future generations.
On the newly built kitchen, Mr. Plaatjies said it would strengthen the school feeding programme and contribute to the welfare and well-being of learners.
Chief Mathealira Masupha welcomed the developments, saying they were evidence of progress in the area.
“Our problems keep getting solved,” he said. “We recently received two classrooms, water was also a problem but now we have it.”
The chief noted that residents can now make emergency calls, which was previously impossible due to poor network coverage.
He appealed to the relevant authorities to address the shortage of electricity in the area, saying the community would benefit even more now that the telecommunications tower has been installed.
The event was attended by community members, school representatives and officials from Econet Telecom Lesotho, who joined residents in celebrating the improvements.
