BEREA COUNCILOR RAISES ALARM OVER RISING UNEMPLOYMENT

Berea, March 10 — Unemployment has become a growing concern in Corn Exchange, where councilor Mr. Phafa Selialia has urged authorities to create job opportunities for residents, particularly through infrastructure development.

In an interview with the Agency, Mr. Selialia stated that most people in his electoral division are unemployed and the situation that worries him is that many residents regularly approach him seeking assistance.

He explained that heavy rainfall has damaged roads and worsened donga erosion in the area, suggesting that the government could address both the infrastructure challenges and unemployment by hiring residents to carry out repair work.

Mr. Selialia added that the situation has been made worse by the decline of piece jobs that residents previously relied on.

He said many local farmers now use weed-killing chemicals instead of hiring people to weed their fields, leaving many villagers without a source of income.

He therefore called on the relevant authorities to intervene and introduce employment initiatives that would help residents earn a living while improving the community’s infrastructure.
