DESPITE CHALLENGES, BASOTHO STUDENTS SUCCEED ABROAD

Maseru, April 14 — Basotho students studying abroad continue to face challenges such as language barriers, cultural differences, bullying and discrimination, but are adapting and succeeding in their academic pursuits despite these difficulties.

In an interview with the Agency, Ms. Lerato Mohale, a student at the University of the Free State in South Africa, said language barriers remain one of the main challenges experienced by Basotho students abroad. She explained that although lessons are conducted in English, communication can still be difficult due to differences in accents, speech pace and expressions among lecturers and fellow students from diverse backgrounds.

Ms. Mohale noted that this often makes it challenging for Basotho students to fully understand discussions and participate effectively in group work, particularly when unfamiliar terms or local expressions are used. She advised fellow students to overcome language barriers by practising English regularly, seeking clarification when necessary, and actively participating in discussions to improve comprehension and communication skills.

Meanwhile, Mr. Teboho Moloi, who is studying at the Indian Institute of Science said adapting to a new culture is another significant challenge. He explained that differences in lifestyle, food, social behaviour and daily routines can make it difficult for students to adjust when they first arrive in a foreign country…
