EDUCATION MINISTRY TRAINS JOURNALISTS

Maseru, March 06 — The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is training and sensitising  journalists on the Lesotho Education Improvement Project (LEIP).

Welcoming the media at the training held in Maseru on Friday, MoET Deputy Principal Secretary (DPS), Ms. Refiloe Kepa indicated the training session is meant to strengthen relations between the media and the Ministry by keeping them informed about current educational projects in the Ministry.

She added that the media remains vital  in informing and educating the society about issues affecting them as well as holding the government accountable hence the training.

According to the DPS, this project was launched in Mafeteng a few months ago, seeking to develop the education sector holistically for the development of the nation.

Talking about part of project components,  ECOL Director Assessment and Evaluation  Dr. ‘Mamolibeli Taolane stated that they are now into national assessment, saying they are randomly collecting data amongst grade nine learners so that they are fully prepared ahead of grade 11 final examination.

Therefore, she said it is expected that results of the national assessment outcome will be released in May,  saying this will identify gaps and challenges facing learners and teachers after cancellation of Junior Certificates at secondary levels.

“Through data collection, we want to identify challenges, especially in STEAM subjects  to be able to offer necessary support to learners.”

This she said will help in shaping learners prior tertiary institutions so that they are better positioned.

One of the journalists, Mr. Majara Molupi of ‘The Post’ newspaper, appreciated the training and the project objectives, stating  that this project if well implemented will go a long way in reshaping learners.

However, he called the Ministry to ensure work on the grounds,  develop learners and teachers for improved quality education.

In the quest to promote universal education for all, MoET is implementing different programmes and projects and LEIP is one of them. This project is funded by the World Bank and commenced in 2024 – 2029.
