Maseru, Oct. 03 — A few hours ahead of Lesotho’s 57th independence, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is continuing with official announcement of local government elections held countrywide last weekend.
Addressing the audience at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre on Tuesday, IEC Chairperson Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane said at Teba-Teba council Berea, which has 12 electoral divisions, DC won two electoral divisions at 01 and 05, RFP won three electoral divisions namely at 02, 04 and 06 while 03, 09 and 12 were won by independent candidates. ABC won four electoral divisions namely 07, 08, 10 and 11.
Therefore, he alluded that there are four special seats one for ABC, the other to AD while DC and RFP also got a seat each.
Announcing results for Motanasela council, where there are 12 electoral divisions as well, Commissioner IEC, Mr. Ts’oeu Petlane mentioned that ABC won Motanasela 01, 03 and 08. AD won Motanasela 02 and 07, DC won Motanasela 04 while RFP won Motanasela 05, 06, 11 and 12 and BAP won 09 and 10.
As far as special seats are concerned at Motanasela, there are four seats, which have been shared among ABC, AD, DC and RFP as according to Mr. Petlane.
In another story, Commissioner Dr. Karabo Mokobocho announced six special seats of Senqunyane council where DC obtained three seats and RFP got three respectively. At Manka council, there are four council seats which have been shared among ABC, DC and two seats for RFP.
In the meantime, Civic Education Manager IEC, Mrs. Lydia Macheli also assured the nation that prior to official publication, the results are also checked thoroughly by the election coordinating committee made up of political parties representatives present at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre.
In these elections, IEC has recorded a total of 1,388, 206 as total number of voters, with 19.20 percent having been registered as voter turnout while 7,116 are registered canditates and political parties are 51.
