FARE INCREASES DRAW CONCERN FROM TAXI DRIVERS

Berea, May 07 — One of the taxi drivers in Berea has expressed concern over the newly approved transport fare increases announced by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, saying the hike comes at a difficult time as many Basotho continue to face economic hardships.

Speaking in an interview with the agency, taxi driver Mr Kananelo Ramokoatsi said transport operators are already struggling due to the current economic situation, adding that the new fares might heavily affect them and create further challenges in their businesses.

He explained that many passengers already struggle to afford transportation costs and often board taxis without enough money, leaving drivers uncertain whether commuters will be able to pay the full fares once the new prices take effect.

Mr Ramokoatsi further stated that one of the major challenges facing taxi operators is the continuous rise in fuel prices, saying this, combined with fare adjustments, will have a significant impact on sustaining their operations.

He also appealed to the government to consider introducing gradual annual fare increases, even if small, so that passengers can adjust over time and better cope with rising transport costs.

Mr Ramokoatsi added that taxi operators also pay tax and are required to renew operating documents regularly, saying he hopes the government can also explore other ways of supporting the transport sector.
