AFRICA CDC URGES VIGILANCE AMID HANTAVIRUS CONCERNS

Maseru, May 07 — The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has urged African countries to remain vigilant following reports of hantavirus cases linked to a cruise ship, although no evidence of transmission within African countries has been recorded so far.

In a statement,  Africa CDC said the risk to the general public remains low, but Member States are encouraged to strengthen preparedness and preventive measures to avoid possible outbreaks.

The continental health body advised countries to reinforce port health services, strengthen infection prevention and control systems, and ensure timely reporting of any suspected cases.

According to the statement, hantavirus infections are commonly associated with exposure to rodents or contaminated environments. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle aches and respiratory difficulties.

Africa CDC further encouraged travellers to maintain good hygiene practices, avoid contact with rodents and potentially contaminated areas, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop after travelling.

The organisation said it will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Health authorities across the continent are expected to remain on alert despite the low public health risk currently reported.
