I DID NOT INJURE MYSELF – BERENG

Maseru, Aug. 30 — Mr. Tlotliso Bereng says it was impossible for him to have injured himself and broken his spine, as per medical report.

This he said when being cross examined before the Commission of Inquiry by one of the Correctional Officers, Ts’epo Mokhethi who earlier in his testimony said he did not assault Bereng although he entered his prison cell during the search exercise. The latter was conducted at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) on December 22, 2023 which resulted in the assault of inmates, leaving Bereng paralyzed.

Mr. Bereng, who had to be released from prison due to his condition added that it was even impossible for him to have injured himself given the fact that inmates are not allowed to be in possession of prohibited items, especially dangerous tools .

“I did not injure myself especially because I was searched and nothing was found in my possession,” he said.

However, Mokhethi insisted he did not assault Bereng and was not carrying anything when he entered his cell with another recruit.
