IOM SENSITIZE KEY STAKEHOLDERS ON MIGRATION, CLIMATE CHANGE

Leribe, Nov. 06 — With the purpose of supporting climate adaptation efforts and community resilience in Leribe, International Organisation for Migration is holding a one-day meeting with the key stakeholders at Hlotse in Leribe on Thursday.

This is under the project, ‘Supporting Climate Adaptive Solution in Lesotho through Policy and Community Based Green Economy.’

Addressing the key stakeholders, Project Coordinator Mrs. ‘Makarabo Monaheng said the purpose of the meeting is to gain knowledge on climate change and waste management.

She explained that this is with the intention of reducing waste from the environment.

Mrs. Monaheng further said the meeting will mainly hold discussions on linkages between migration, environment and climate change.

She reminded that they are in the process of developing the strategy in support of Ministry of Environment and Forestry, saying it will only be developed after an assessment on migration and climate change is accomplished.

Speaking at the same meeting Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) Climate Change Officer Mrs. ‘Malerato Ngakane said recently the climate in Lesotho comprises only of summer and winter due to climate change.

“Before we had Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring,” she stated.

Mrs. Ngakane said the greenhouses gases cause climate change, namely carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

Talking about climate change impacts, she said they are soil erosion and low agriculture production. . .
