LCCU CONCERNED ABOUT NON-OBSERVANCE OF RIGHTS

Maseru, Apr. 07 — The Lesotho Child Counseling Unit (LCCU) has raised concern about deteriorating observance of the rights of children in the country.

Speaking in an interview, Director LCCU Ms. Lydia Muso stated that recent crime reports show that children are frequently raped and abused a lot these days. She pointed out that this is a sign that the rights of children are not appreciated and are violated in the country

She further stated that the law emphasises on the best interest of a child therefore everything done should be in the best interest of children. She indicated granting of bail to people accused or rape, especially against children make it seem like those at the forefront of law enforcement consider the rights of perpetrators more than those of victims.

Ms. Muso indicated that child neglect is also on the rise. She said it is unfair for parents to abandon their children under the guise that they seek a better life for them.
