Maseru, Sept. 28 — For many young Basotho, starting a business can be difficult, with limited access to finance, business skills and markets making it challenging to turn ideas into sustainable enterprises.
The Lesotho Enterprise Assistance Programme (LEAP) is seeking to change this by supporting young entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses.
Through the programme, young Basotho are given opportunities to develop their business ideas, strengthen their skills and build enterprises that can generate income and create employment.
For young women in particular, such support can provide an opportunity to become economically independent and contribute to the growth of their communities.
One of the beneficiaries, ’Manapo Sekonyela, who runs a spaza shop, said she had learned how LEAP could help her grow her business.
“I attended a meeting where we were told what is needed for us to get the financial assistance, and I am excited to say I am going to apply,” she said.
She said the meeting had also given her greater confidence as an entrepreneur.
Another beneficiary, Mamosa Lebusa, who rears sheep, said LEAP’s support had helped her move her business beyond the early stages.
She said funding, training, equipment and mentorship had helped her significantly.
Her experience highlights some of the challenges faced by young entrepreneurs and the importance of practical support beyond simply having a business idea.
For LEAP, supporting young entrepreneurs is not only about helping individuals establish businesses, but also about creating opportunities for young Basotho to participate more actively in the economy.
Young entrepreneurs, however, continue to face challenges, including access to finance, finding reliable markets, managing business finances and sustaining their enterprises in a competitive environment.
As more young Basotho seek alternatives to formal employment, programmes such as LEAP are placing entrepreneurship at the centre of efforts to create economic opportunities for the country’s youth.
