LEGISLATORS AT LOGGERHEADS ON INHERITANCE BILL

Maseru, March 18 – Legislators are currently at loggerheads debating on the Administration of Estates and Inheritance Bill, 2024 in the National Assembly.

The overall objectives of the Bill are to abolish customary law, introduce the inheritance of a female child, introduce inheritance of siblings regardless of age or gender on all equal basis- all siblings inherit equally.

The Bill also seeks to introduce inheritance of children born out of wedlock from their fathers where there is proof of maintenance, introduce inheritance under customary law-polygamous and non-polygamous marriage or union, bestow upon every person a right or freedom to write a Will or written instructions as well as to introduce inheritance of vulnerable people.
