LESOTHO EXPECTS ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALLS IN WINTER

Maseru, April 03 — The Forecast predicts enhanced probability (65%) for above normal rainfall over the country for the period April to August 2023.

This was stated by the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) Weather Forecaster Mr. Rethabile Mphahama when speaking in an interview with the Agency on Monday.

He indicated that during the period August to October, below normal  conditions (with 55% probability of occurrence) are expected  countrywide except the north-eastern  (Mokhotlong)  highlands  where  0%  chance  of  above  normal  conditions  can  be expected.

He noted that temperatures are anticipated to be above normal throughout winter months for the whole country, however, occurrences of cold spells and snowfall episodes are likely to be experienced in the coming 2023 winter season.

Mr. Mphahama highlighted that rainfall is expected to be around 50 mm per month for the season of April, May to June in the extreme northern parts of the country, while the rest of the country is expected to receive around 20 mm per month for the same season.

He pointed out that from the months of May to September, rainfall amounts are expected to be in the ranges of 5 to 25 mm per month, with northern region being at the extreme high end of prediction.

He further said the season of August, September to October is expected to improve, with most regions moving to 20 mm per month, and the extreme north being over 50 mm.

The 2022/23 summer season was predicted to receive above normal rainfall. The months of October 2022 to February 2023 received rainfall amount above the climatological means for most stations.

The only exception is Thaba-Tseka station in the December, January to February season which received slightly below normal rainfall.
