LESOTHO LAUNCHES NATIONAL MULTI-SECTORAL MECHANISM TO TACKLE NCDIs

Maseru, Oct. 10 — In a move to combat the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs), the Ministry of Health, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the NCDI Poverty Network, and other partners, officially launched the National Multi-sectoral NCDIs Coordinating Mechanism.

The event convened stakeholders from across government, civil society, development agencies, and the private sector, signaling a unified front in Lesotho’s fight against NCDIs.

Minister of Health Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane presided over the launch, delivering a powerful message on the urgency of addressing NCDIs, “NCDIs are silent killers. Half of our people are losing their lives to these conditions, often without warning. But today marks a turning point. I am proud to launch the national multi-sectoral coordinating mechanism for NCDIs and mental health.”

He highlighted recent strides, including the construction of the Starlight Oasis of Hope Cancer Centre, Lesotho’s first palliative care facility and the rollout of a comprehensive NCD package at the primary healthcare level. The Minister called for collective action to promote healthier environments, “Let us work together to advocate for policies that make healthy living an easier choice. We are committed to strengthening our health facilities to deliver high-quality care, including mental health services.”
