MACHINE LEARNING KEY TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION, WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Beijing, June 25 — Machine Learning (ML), a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI), is rapidly transforming industries and societies around the world by improving efficiency, decision-making and service delivery across multiple sectors.

This was highlighted by the Associate Researcher at the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA), Ms. Wang Yaqing, during a presentation on the applications of Machine Learning at the ongoing Ministerial Seminar on New Media Capacity Building for Women Officials from Belt and Road Countries in Beijing, China.

Addressing participants from various developing countries, Ms. Wang explained that Machine Learning enables computer systems to learn from data and improve their performance without being explicitly programmed.

She mentioned that technology is becoming increasingly important in the digital era, driving innovation in both public and private sectors.

Ms. Wang noted that Machine Learning is widely used in virtual assistants and natural language processing, where intelligent systems can understand and respond to human language. She added that such technologies are enhancing communication and customer engagement through automated services.

She further indicated that social media platforms are among the largest beneficiaries of Machine Learning, using the technology for sentiment analysis, content recommendation and spam filtering, thereby improving user experiences and online safety.

In the transport sector, Ms. Wang mentioned that Machine Learning is supporting traffic management, safety monitoring and air traffic control systems, helping authorities to make data-driven decisions and improve operational efficiency.

She also highlighted the role of Machine Learning in the financial sector, where it is being used for fraud detection, portfolio management and algorithmic trading, enabling institutions to strengthen security and optimise financial services.

According to Ms. Wang, the healthcare industry has equally embraced the technology through applications such as disease diagnosis, drug discovery and robotic-assisted surgery, contributing to improved patient outcomes and medical research.

In the field of e-commerce, she said that Machine Learning helps businesses provide personalised recommendations, targeted advertising and enhanced customer support, resulting in improved consumer satisfaction and business growth.

Ms. Wang encouraged participants to embrace emerging technologies and strengthen digital skills to ensure that women are actively involved in shaping the future digital economy.

The seminar, hosted by China Women’s University, brings together women officials and media practitioners from Belt and Road countries to enhance their capacity in new media technologies, digital communication and innovation.
