MELIKANE’S REMOTE VILLAGES STRUGGLE WITHOUT ROADS, NETWORK ACCESS

Qacha’s Nek, July.15 — Several villages in ’Melikane remain cut off from basic services due to lack of roads and mobile network coverage, leaving residents isolated and vulnerable.

Speaking to the Agency, ’Melikane Councillor Mr. Lehlohonolo Mahase revealed that villages such as Ha Seketana, Khohlong, Kholokoe, Makenong, Letsatseng, Ha Chopho, Sekiring, Ha Thokoa, Thaba-Koto, Lepapaneng, Ha Rasekoele, and Khubetsoana have no road access at all.

“People walk up to nine hours to reach ’Melikane Health Centre and then face another nine-hour journey back home,” he said. “Because vehicles cannot reach them, some communities still rely on stretchers to carry the sick or even the deceased.”

Communication remains a constant challenge, Mr. Mahase added. “Getting messages across is difficult. Even coordinating community meetings often fails because there’s no network.”

The lack of roads and network coverage impacts every aspect of life — health, education, governance, and social connections. “Residents leave home as early as 3:00 a.m. to reach clinics or attend public gatherings on time,” he explained. . . .
