MINISTER RAMOELETSI TESTIFIES 

Maseru, May 13 — The Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi has on Monday testified before the Commission of Inquiry on the incidents that occured at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) on  December 21, 2023.

The Commission, which is Chaired by Justice Realeboha Mathaba was established with the objective to investigate the circumstances that led to the escape and torture of inmates which resulted to death of one inmate leaving the other paralyzed in December last year at MCCI.

In his testimony, Mr. Ramoeletsi confirmed that he was aware and received a report on incidents that occured at MCCI, saying he received a call from Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) Commissioner around 22:00 p.m on December 21 informing him about the escape of six inmates and later informed him that two inmates were recaptured while four were still at large.

He indicated that on the following day, he was notified that the inmates were tortured and decided to visit the institution on Saturday morning to get a clear picture and visit the maximum prison where inmates were reported to had escaped and see if inmates were indeed victimized.
