MOET EXPANDS RECEPTION CLASSES IN QACHA’SNEK

Qacha’s Nek, Jan. 14 — As the 2026 academic year resumes, 26 reception classes have been attached to primary schools across Qacha’sNek.

The development was revealed in an interview with the Agency on Wednesday by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) National Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Teacher Trainer for Qacha’s Nek, Ms. Nteboheleng Jim.

She said the initiative is part of MoET’s  efforts to improve learning outcomes at the foundational level, ensuring that children acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills before progressing to higher grades.

Qacha’s Nek is among five pilot districts selected for the programme, alongside Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseka, Maseru and Berea. The initiative is being implemented under the Foundational Phase Support Project (FPSP) with support from UNICEF Lesotho.

According to Ms. Jim, the project was informed by research findings indicating that many learners advance through the education system without mastering basic reading, writing and numeracy skills, particularly in Mathematics, Sesotho and English.

“Foundational literacy and numeracy are key to ensuring that children know how to read and write,” she said.

She explained that Qacha’s Nek previously had 25 reception classes, but under the project, 47 primary schools have been selected to host reception classes, with teachers already contracted…
