MASERU, Sep. 1 — The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed veteran coach Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, marking his return to the national team after 14 years.
Speaking at a media briefing, SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan said that Mosimane takes over from Belgian coach Hugo Broos, whose contract ended following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.
He indicated that the appointment comes at a crucial time for Bafana Bafana, with the team facing a demanding international programme, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign and preparations towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
In his acceptance speech, Mosimane said he was returning with greater experience and knowledge, adding that the opportunity comes with significant responsibility.
He said he was ready to shoulder the responsibility of leading the national team and contribute towards taking South African football to greater heights.
Mosimane returns to a position he previously occupied from 2010 to 2012. He subsequently established himself as one of Africa’s most successful coaches, winning the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns and twice with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The appointment represents a second permanent spell for Mosimane at the helm of Bafana Bafana and comes after his extensive coaching experience in Africa and abroad.
