Maseru, Jan. 12 — The Department of Health in South Africa has announced the recall of Nestlé NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula (0–12 months) 800g, batch number 51660742F3, following concerns over the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus that poses a food safety risk.
The recall follows an alert that the affected batch may be unsafe for consumption, particularly for infants, prompting authorities to advise retailers and consumers to remove the product from circulation.
Speaking in an interview, Pick n Pay Sales Floor Manager Mrs. Libuseng Makhobalo said the store last stocked the recalled product between June and August last year.
She confirmed that since then, the specific product has not been available in their stores, adding that Pick n Pay currently only carries Nestlé NAN products meant for infants aged 12 months and above.
Meanwhile, Checkers Branch Manager Mrs. Mapitso Rampai told the Agency that the retailer had discontinued the product earlier due to it being a slow-moving line.
She emphasised that Checkers has not been selling the product since its discontinuation.
Health authorities continue to urge parents and caregivers to check product batch numbers carefully and to return any affected items to the place of purchase, while retailers remain vigilant in ensuring consumer safety.
