Maseru, Mar.12 – The refurbished St. Lawrence Catholic Church Mantšonyane is set to be officially handed over and opened on Sunday in a ceremony to be officiated by Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane.
The inauguration of the church coincides with the Prime Minister’s 68th birthday, making the occasion significant for both the local Catholic community and residents of Mantšonyane.
In an interview with the Lesotho News Agency (LENA), the Press Attaché in the Office of the Prime Minister, Thapelo Mabote, confirmed that the Prime Minister will preside over the official handover ceremony and join the community in celebrating the completion of the church refurbishment.
Mr. Mabote said the event reflects government’s commitment to supporting community development initiatives that strengthen social cohesion and spiritual wellbeing.
“The Prime Minister will officiate the handover of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mantšonyane on March 15, and the day will also mark his 68th birthday, making it a meaningful occasion to celebrate with the community,” he said.
He added that the Prime Minister values opportunities that bring communities together and recognises the important role that religious institutions play in promoting unity, moral guidance and social development.
Mr. Mabote further noted that the inauguration is expected to draw community members, church leaders, government officials and other stakeholders who will gather to witness the official opening of the church.
The St. Lawrence Catholic Church was originally constructed in 1920 and later renovated in 2005. In 2021, the building was severely damaged by strong winds, which led to the recent refurbishment.
The Lesotho News Agency will continue to follow developments surrounding the event.
