Qacha’sNek, July.16 — Four young representatives from Qacha’s Nek were today prepared by the District Child Protection Team (DCPT), led by the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, ahead of the national Children’s Parliament scheduled for July 24 in Maseru.
The representatives, Bohlokoa Sefeane (15), Reitumetse Ramakongoana (17), Karabelo Khatlile (12) and Bohlokoa Jane (16), took part in a preparation session where Sefeane and Ramakongoana, both of whom participated last year, shared insights and guidance with the newcomers.
“The Children’s Parliament is a platform where children raise real issues and influence decisions that affect them,” said District Child Welfare Officer Ms. Lerato Kopo. She added that the initiative, supported by UNICEF Lesotho and World Vision International Lesotho, empowers children to engage in matters affecting their well-being.
She encouraged the children to speak boldly. “Be vocal, express yourselves and participate. Own it in order to enjoy it.”
Returning participant Sefeane described last year’s Parliament as “fun and educative” but voiced concern that key issues they raised including child labour, access to sanitary products for girls and the criminalization of child marriage remain unresolved. . . .
