Qacha’s Nek, May. 21 — While parts of Lesotho’s highlands woke to a blanket of snow, Qacha’s Nek was spared the snowfall — but not the biting cold that has left wool and mohair farmers deeply concerned.
Despite the absence of snow, the district is among those facing freezing temperatures that, while picturesque, have sparked anxiety among livestock producers.
Speaking to the Agency on Wednesday, Mr. Mothibeli Makhetha, Chairperson of the Qacha’s Nek Wool and Mohair Growers Association (QWMGA), expressed worry over the impact of the cold snap, especially with animals still stationed at remote cattle posts.
“This coldness will force the animals to come home, and I am worried although I haven’t received reports of fatalities yet,” he said. “I’m in trouble because when a farmer loses an animal, we also lose as an association. My fear of losses is too much. Farmers have deployed workers they must pay whether they lose animals or not, and if a farmer suffers a loss, it affects everyone involved.” . . .
