Berea, April 15 — In an effort to enhance production of food, the Department of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition through Teyateyaneng Resource Centre has embarked on a journey to sensitize farmers about the Smart Subsidy and Insurance initiative.
When sharing the concept to the farmers, the Extension Officer Mr. Pule Makosholo said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition in partnership with the Smallholder Agricultural Development Project (SADP) II has initiated the smart subsidy and insurance which is more like a package whereby farmers are provided with all farming inputs at once relatively to the area to be planted and measured by the Department of Agriculture.
Mr. Makosholo added that under the smart subsidy it also provides farmers with an insurance to cover against drought only, citing that initiative only grain crops are insured not vegetables.
“Before injecting money into a smart subsidy and insurance for the farmer who has signed an agreement, soil analysis will be conducted with the usage of advanced technology in order to be well informed about the nutrients in the soil,” he explained. RM/TL
