Mohale’s Hoek, Aug.13 — The District Education Inspector Mr. Thabiso Lehula says some of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene facilities constructed in various schools during the Covid-19 pandemic have turned into white elephants rating the level of hygiene and sanitation in schools at 2 percent.
Mr. Lehula noted this in a meeting held for various stakeholders, by a consulting firm Kagga and Partners Limited (Uganda), partnering with Development Solutions (Pty) Limited (Lesotho) which have been engaged by the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project – Phase II to develop the National Sanitation Strategy, upon realising the low rate of access to sanitation services in the country.
He stated that in cases where WASH clubs are still effective, facilities are still in good shape but students no longer utilise them, either due to the fact that no one is ensuring that they do take sanitation seriously.
Mr. Lehula also noted that in some schools, toilets do not cater for people living with disabilities, stating that it is about time the Ministry of Education and Training intensified its inspection beyond academics, to holding regular trainings on health and sanitation issues. . . .
