Qacha’s Nek, Oct. 30 — Barely two days after the Agency reported on the ongoing struggles of Mofutho Primary School, disaster struck: parts of the dilapidated Roman Catholic Church (RCC) which serves as the classroom for grades 1 to 6, collapsed.
Students are crammed into corners of the crumbling structure which features broken windows, a malfunctioning door, and a deteriorating roof, making it nearly impossible to focus. Teachers are forced to take children outside to regain their attention while they sit on the ground, underscoring the dire conditions they face.
The school has never offered grade 7 due to infrastructure challenges. In an interview with the Agency, the school principal, Mr. Thabo Mohlomi expressed deep frustration, revealing that the building’s instability, suspected to be caused by wind and heavy rain, poses a grave risk.
“Luckily, there were no pupils inside when it occurred,” he said, adding, “Now we’re putting our lives at risk; this building is too old and no longer safe. I fear that the big stones could fall at any moment and harm our students.”
