BEES VITAL IN KEEPING PEOPLE, PLANET HEALTHY – GUGUSHE

Maseru, Apr. 26 — There is a need for society to remember the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping the planet and people healthy.

These are the views of Maseru Agriculture Association (Maseru Beekeepers Association), Secretary Mrs. ‘Mamatséliso Gugushe in an interview with the Agency on Friday.

She explained that while this day is meant to celebrate honey day, it is also dedicated to Maseru farmers to showcase their products and services indicating beekeeping as an important agricultural activity which has a potential of creating employment while also improving Lesotho’s economic growth.

The Secretary further stated that apart from bees playing a vital role towards the planet and people, it is also important to promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats.

“We must also improve abundance and diversity of bees, support the sustainable development of beekeeping as they also serve as sentinels for emergent environmental risks, indicating the health of local ecosystems”, she stressed.

Meanwhile, the Agency has established that as part of celebrating this day, there will also be raffle completion amongst farmers whereby those winning will be awarded prizes.

Similarly, the United Nations 2019 report on bees has shown that bees and other pollinating insects also contribute in improving food production for almost two billion small farmers worldwide, thus ensuring food security.
