CAREER FAIR AN EYE OPENER

MASERU, FEB. 02- – A two-day career guidance hosted by the Council for Higher Education has been an eye opener.

One student from Lancer’s high school, Thato Masupha, stated that she is very motivated after this career guidance.

Masupha said , she came to the fair still confused about the programme she wants to do but this session has helped her to choose wisely and she now knows what she is going to focus on.

“I am happy because I now know that there are many institutions I can go to.

She said she is going to work hard and mainly focus on subjects like accounting and maths a lot.

“My parents wanted me to do sciences at National University of Lesotho but I want to study accounting.  This session helped not to listen to anyone but focus on what I want. Immediately after the publication of the results next year I want to apply. I see myself as an accountant after five years,” She said.

Mr. Tšepiso Taioe, the admissions and registration officer of the Lesotho College of Education (LCE), emphasised that career guidance is very important to students because it guides them on their programmes and helps them make informed decisions, rather than receiving distorted information from people instead of coming directly to the institution.

Mr. Taioe added that for students who could not obtain a scholarship from NMDS, the college has a sponsorship called the Chairman’s Trust, which only sponsors students who have passed well.

He further stated that the college has introduced a new part-time degree programme, which is an Open Distance Learning (ODL) programme that will enable students to study from home.

He explained that the college already had a degree programme that runs for four years, but due to students’ demand, it was upgraded to a part-time programme. He also stated that the institution guides students on programmes such as Pre-School and Foundation, which train teachers for Grades 1 to 3, as well as Diploma and Degree programmes in Education.

CHE held a two-day career guidance programme in Maseru. Students from different high schools attended. They learned about programmes, admission rules, and scholarships. The event aimed to give accurate information and help students choose careers they like.
