Maseru, May 21 — The European Union (EU) and Lesotho on Thursday celebrated 50 years of partnership, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation in development, governance, climate resilience and economic growth.
Speaking during the symbolic celebration held in Maseru, the Ambassador of the European Union to Lesotho, Ms. Mette Sunnergren, said the long-standing relationship between Lesotho and the EU has been built on friendship, mutual respect and shared values.
She noted that over the years, the partnership has contributed to development initiatives in various sectors including education, agriculture, health, governance, renewable energy and institutional strengthening.
Ms. Sunnergren said the European Union remains committed to supporting Lesotho’s development agenda through programmes aimed at empowering communities, creating opportunities for young people and promoting inclusive economic growth.
She further highlighted the importance of cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic instability, food insecurity and threats to democratic institutions.
“The European Union believes strongly in the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. These principles continue to guide our engagement with partners around the world, including the Kingdom of Lesotho,” she said.
The ambassador added that the celebration was not only a reflection on the achievements of the past five decades, but also an opportunity to renew commitment towards a peaceful, sustainable and prosperous future.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Limpho Tau, said Lesotho looks forward to a brighter future and more fruitful results as the country continues to strengthen its longstanding relationship with the European Union.
