CASH FOR WORK TARGETING STARTS

Maseru, May 27 — There is progress on the planned cash for work project, an initiative by the government as intervention on escalating food insecurity in the country.

As of Monday the Maseru District Disaster Management Team (DDMT) kickstarted targeting beneficiaries in Abia constituency.

The exercise will from Tuesday extend to other constituencies in Maseru urban and rural until mid June.

The government of Lesotho has put aside M100,104.160 million for the project which will run for six months in all the 80 constituencies across the country. 

The number of households to be drawn from the 22 constituencies within the Maseru district with a coverage of 264 sites. While each constituency will have 12 sites to work on with 187 people per site during the period of six months.

According to the Lesotho Vulnerability Assessment Committee (LVAC) report made between May and June last year an estimated 581, 000 Basotho faced food crises in the country.

This number translated to 145, 250 households, and it is anticipated that this statistics could be even more this year since the Bureau of Statistics and LVAC are yet to conduct a new study on the summer harvesting in order to enable the government to take appropriate action. 

The cash for work projects are expected to start on June 03 and end on November 30 countrywide.
