Berea, April 22 — Engineers and technicians from the Roads Directorate (RD) across the country attended a capacity-building workshop in Teya-teyaneng on Wednesday, aimed at enhancing the quality of road construction in Lesotho.
The purpose of the workshop was to help engineers and technicians improve how they deliver work in their districts and to strengthen the development capacity of the road sector.
Presenting on project management fundamentals, senior consultant Mr. Shege Kenuthia said that effective project management is crucial in the road sub-sector, as it ensures the delivery of safe, durable, and functional roads.
He noted that proper project management also helps protect project timelines, control costs, and maintain community access while ensuring projects are properly documented for operations and maintenance.
In a separate presentation on on-site quality control, Mr. Tšoeu Mokaloba outlined the roles and responsibilities of engineers, which include accepting or rejecting construction work based on compliance with standards.
He emphasized the importance of material testing, noting that soil, gravel, aggregates, bituminous, and cementitious materials must be assessed to ensure they meet the required specifications.
Participants were also introduced to a new mobile application designed to collect, edit, and share geospatial data, enabling efficient mapping even offline.
The workshop follows a similar session held on Tuesday for RD directors and senior management as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s road construction systems and improve infrastructure quality.
