Maseru, Jan. 16–Growing concern has been raised over the increasing number of rape cases in Lesotho, with records from the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) indicating that more than three rape incidents are reported every week on the police’s official Facebook page.
The recurring reports have sparked public anxiety, with civil society organisations and mental health professionals warning that the figures may represent only a fraction of actual cases, as many survivors still choose not to report sexual violence due to fear, stigma and lack of trust in the justice system.
Speaking in an interview, psychologist Dr. Calvin Motebang said the rise in sexual violence cannot be viewed in isolation, as it is closely linked to broader social and psychological pressures currently affecting the country.
Dr. Motebang pointed to high unemployment, worsening economic conditions and populationgrowth as major stressors placing strain on individuals and families.
