Maseru, Sept. 12 — Disaster Management Authority (DMA) is currently conducting a study regarding people who were affected by strong winds last week in the districts of Mokhotlong, Leribe, Berea, Maseru, Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek.
This was revealed by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Mr. Limpho Tau in the National Assembly on Friday.
Mr. Tau said the study is based on the number of people who were affected, their state of health, status of living and the property destroyed amongst others.
He indicated that winds left some residents in crisis as houses and schools were blown by winds, indicating that in Leribe, five buildings were affected, Mokhotlong two, Berea 15, Maseru 36, Mafeteng 30 and Mohale’s Hoek 18.]


He added that DMA in collaboration with Lesotho Red Cross and World Vision is currently extending a helping hand to the most vulnerable, as a rapid response initiative.
He further said DMA will prepare a general report with regard to this matter including recommendations on how the government should assist those affected in terms of roofing and reconstruction of houses.
“DMA will also provide education and training to the public regarding safety and ensuring that their houses are strong enough to withstand climate change.
Meanwhile, the government through DMA has managed to rehabilitate and re construct 143 houses of Basotho in the last financial year and of this number, 24 were in Maseru district, Mohale’s Hoek 22, Berea 13, Mafeteng 20, Leribe 14, Thaba-Tseka 10, Quthing 14, Mokhotlong four and Botha-Bothe two.
