DMA TO CONTINUE BUYING WHEAT FROM BASOTHO

Maseru, Mar. 04 — The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) announced that it will continue buying wheat from Basotho in FMU storerooms in the country.

This DMA announced on February 28 where it said that it will be buying wheat from Basotho at selected FMU storerooms until the expected amount is met as last year, they did not reach its intended target.

In an interview with the Agency on Tuesday, the assistant DMA Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mahlape Koali stated that last year’s target was 10000 tonnes of wheat to be bought across the country but the target was not reached.  

She added that it was the first time DMA bought wheat from Basotho at districts, adding that in Butha-Buthe and Qacha’s Nek they did not buy any wheat from them and districts like Maseru, Mafeteng and Berea made a total of 1814 tonnes.

Ms. Koali mentioned that it was their first time buying wheat in 2023 as the process started before the financial year of 2022/23, she added that even though it was their first time buying wheat DMA is determined to continue buying cereals from Basotho so that it reaches its target goal of 10000 tonnes of wheat.

Furthermore, she said that every farmer is expected to sell their cereals and added that DMA buys wheat from Basotho to empower them. 

Disaster Management Authority is a national entity under The Prime Minister’s Office, it is a Public Office established in terms of Disaster Management. Its primary purpose is to regulate disaster management activities, including prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery measures.

The DMA oversees disaster management efforts at the national level.
