FELETU URGES GOVERNMENT TO HONOUR CHIEFS’ SALARY SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT

Maseru, June 16 — The Federation of Lesotho Trade Unions (FELETU) has called on the government to honour a settlement agreement regarding salary adjustments for local chiefs.

The agreement, which was reached following negotiations between FELETU and the Ministry of Local Government, proposed an increase in the lowest category of chiefs’ salaries from M1,500 to M3,001. The M3,001 figure was a compromise offered by the Ministry, in contrast to FELETU’s initial demand of M6,000.

However, FELETU representative Mr. Hlalefang Seoaholimo expressed concern that the Ministry has not implemented the agreement as anticipated. The salary adjustments were expected to take effect in April this year, but to date, there has been no action.

According to a recent report by the Ministry of Local Government to the Parliamentary Social Cluster, the matter is still pending Cabinet consideration. The Ministry stated that it is yet to table the issue before Cabinet to determine the way forward.
