Maseru, Mar. 11 — Multiples of Basotho gathered at the foothills of the King Moshoeshoe I fortress in Thaba Bosiu in commemoration of the Moshoeshoe’s day on Monday.
Dressed in different Basotho apparels ranging from ‘maqapha’, ‘lishoeshoe’ and ‘lithethana’ Basotho were spotted at the grounds of Thaba Bosiu LECSA ululating and different performances for this celebration.
While speaking of king Moshoeshoe I, a 78 year-old Mr. Mokhoma Matsoai who graced the event with his presence said that he hopes such commemoration can help Basotho reunite and reconcile for the progression of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
He said that king Moshoeshoe I was known as a peace keeper which he advised Basotho to go back to the deeds of Moshoeshoe towards a stable nation.
King Moshoeshoe I as the founding father of the Basotho nation is reported to have settled at Thaba Bosiu following his departure from Menkhoaneng.
In 1834, King Moshoeshoe I is reported to have embarked on a 116 kilometers walk where along the way he met challenges such as having his grandfather being killed by cannibals.
The Moshoeshoe’s day is celebrated annually by Basotho in commemoration of King Moshoeshoe I death.
