KING PRESENTS AWARDS TO PMAS, RLLA LEARNERS

Maseru, Apr. 17 — His Majesty King Letsie III has presented awards to 28 learners enrolled in the Prince Mohato Award Scheme (PMAS) and 16 learners who successfully completed the Royal Lesotho Lifesaving Award (RLLA) programme.

The recipients underwent training in various components including voluntary service, physical recreation, skills development, adventurous journeys and lifesaving, among others.

Presenting the awards, King Letsie III, who is also the Patron of PMAS, congratulated the learners and expressed pride in their achievements. He further encouraged them to utilise the skills they have acquired to contribute to community development, noting that such competencies are valuable not only to individuals but also to the nation at large.

Speaking at the same event on behalf of the Minister of Education and Training, Chief Executive Officer for Secondary Education, Dr. Jone Marole, said PMAS plays a significant role in the Ministry’s learner care and support initiatives, which are aimed at improving learner retention in schools.

Dr. Marole explained that the four sections of the award include voluntary service, where learners engage in community service while enhancing their social well-being. He added that the adventurous journey component instils a spirit of exploration and teamwork, while physical recreation promotes fitness and the development of healthy social relationships.

RLLA President, Mr. Colin Macdonald, said the programme equips lifesavers with skills to rescue individuals in danger without risking their own lives. He noted that the main risk during rescue operations, particularly in winter, is cold shock.

He further highlighted that children may fall into swimming pools at any time of the year due to carelessness, hence the importance of training competent lifesavers who can respond effectively and safely.

On behalf of PMAS trustees, Mr. Ferdinund Kitayimbure commended the King and the RLLA leadership for sustaining the programmes over the years, noting their positive impact on both learners and communities.

He also urged the award recipients to serve as role models in their schools and communities.

One of the recipients, Mr. Lehlohonolo Mateteko, expressed gratitude for the awards, stating that they symbolise the responsibility and trust placed upon them. He pledged to use the skills gained to benefit their communities.

The awards are presented annually, and both programmes are open to individuals regardless of gender, culture, religion, political affiliation, or physical and mental ability.
