LESOTHO AIMS FOR A SAFE WORKPLACE FOR EMPLOYEES

Maseru, Aug. 20 — The Minister of Gender, Youth and Social development has officially unveiled the statement of commitment and workplace message on Private Sector engagement in Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the workplace and beyond in Maseru on Wednesday.

In his remarks, the Minister Mr. Pitso Maisa said that GBV costs Lesotho billions each year estimated at 5.5 percent of the GDP which he said is the money that could be used to create jobs, improve healthcare and invest in education yet beyond numbers are the real people most being employees who cannot thrive because they feel unsafe, young talent is lost to harassment and families whose lives are shattered by violence.

He indicated that this commitment of the private sector serves as a pledge to uphold, commit and make sure that employees have dignity and safety in their workplaces.

He highlighted that through this statement, the private sector also signals to the nation that dignity and respect at workplace are not negotiable saying this is a vision of Lesotho where every employee in every workplace is valued and respected and where businesses are recognised not only for their economic contribution but for their role in shaping the society that is needed for the next generation.
