MASERU – The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo has commended the local group known as ‘Sotho Kids,’ that has represented Lesotho well in the international community.
This after a youth-led growth currently showcased Basotho culture, arts and creatives participated in the festivals, performing in different parts of Europe, providing a stand for Basotho stories and creativity on a global stage.
The Minister applauded the group for this milestone which he said shared proud moments for Basotho and the entire country by sharing its cultural heritage.
According to Minister Maqelepo, these youth truly demonstrated a high level of commitment, raising the Lesotho flag high. He added that the creative industry has huge potential for growing the economy as well as creating jobs.
Therefore, he highlighted the need to invest more in creatives, adding the 2025/26 Fiscal Year Budget did not include activities such as these ones, indicating it is high time events such as these ones are budgeted for.
The said initiative comes when the country is on the journey beyond bicentennial, that is after it marked 200 years’ existence since founded by the father of the nation Morena Moshoeshoe I.
In conclusion, the showcasing of Basotho culture in Europe also comes at the time when the Ministry of Arts and Creatives announced last year that they will be holding an annual event in a bid to celebrate local creativity.
