LESOTHO HOSTS 59TH SAPP MEETING

Maseru, Nov.06—Lesotho is currently hosting a one day 59th Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) Executive Committee Meeting, where the Ministry of Energy’s Principal Secretary Mr. Tankiso Phapano urged the organ to push for initiatives that will provide solutions to current energy challenges in the region.

He made these remarks when officially opening the meeting attended by member states personally and virtually in Maseru on Thursday. The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) is a cooperation of the national electricity companies in Southern Africa under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The members of SAPP have created a common power grid between their countries and a common market for electricity in the SADC region. The member states include Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Mr. Phapano observed that economies in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries have continued to thrive in fulfilment of the SADC industrialization thrust hence an urgent need for power.

He called upon member states to continue to apply their minds and bring to the table solutions that will keep the lights on, commerce ticking, industry running and agriculture flourishing even in these challenging environments saying electricity is one of the critical driving forces for economic development and they are at the centre of making it work…
