LESOTHO SUBMITS CANDIDATURE FOR AU PEACE, SECURITY COUNCIL

Maseru, Feb.11 — The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho has officially submitted its candidature for membership of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term, reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of peace, security and constitutional order across the African continent.

The election is scheduled to take place on the margins of the AU Executive Council meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior government officials are convened to deliberate on key continental matters.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoana underscored Lesotho’s principled and consistent approach to issues of peace and security, stating that the country stands ready to serve and contribute meaningfully to the continent’s stability.

He noted that Lesotho’s candidature reflects its firm belief in multilateralism, dialogue and preventive diplomacy as critical tools in addressing conflicts and sustaining peace in Africa.

‘Lesotho remains committed to the ideals of the African Union and the strengthening of the African Peace and Security Architecture. Our candidature demonstrates our readiness to support collective African solutions to African challenges,’ he said.

Mr. Mpotjoana further highlighted that Lesotho’s bid aligns with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, particularly the vision of a peaceful and secure Africa driven by its own citizens and playing a dynamic role on the global stage.

The Peace and Security Council is the AU’s standing decision-making organ for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts.

It plays a central role in promoting peace, security and stability on the continent, including overseeing peace support operations and advancing post-conflict reconstruction and development initiatives.

If elected, Lesotho would serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, contributing to efforts aimed at reinforcing constitutional governance, rule-based decision-making and sustainable peace across Africa.

The Government has expressed confidence that its track record of commitment to regional and continental cooperation positions the country well to serve effectively on the Council.
