LMS REPORTS SHIFT IN HEAT LOW

Maseru, Jan. 28 — Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) has announced that the position of the heat low affecting the country is gradually shifting westward.

This change is anticipated to bring an end to the extreme heat conditions that Lesotho has been experiencing by the end of the week.

Mr. Pusetso Nketsa,  explained that the heat low is currently relocating toward western regions, particularly impacting countries such as Botswana, Namibia, and parts of South Africa.

According to him, the severe heat felt across Lesotho is primarily due to a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which has resulted in suppressed ground temperatures.

This year, he said, is noted to be a La Nina year, which typically implies that a cooler winter could follow. However, Mr. Nketsa cautioned that as it is still summer, heat waves and typical summer heat can still be expected.

While discussing the implications of the current weather patterns, Mr. Nketsa warned that rains often following heat waves can be accompanied by storms, hail, and thunder, posing risks to individuals and their property.

La Niña is a recurring climate phenomenon marked by cooler ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific Ocean.

It is regarded as the cold phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, occurring approximately every 3 to 5 years. La Niña typically reinforces trade winds and can significantly influence global weather patterns, resulting in varying climatic conditions such as increased rainfall in some regions while leading to droughts in others.

This context becomes particularly relevant given the ongoing climatic challenges faced by Lesotho, including prolonged dry spells and unpredictable weather that have historically impacted agriculture and water resources throughout the nation.
