Qacha’s Nek, Oct. 17— The newly completed Makhaola Lerotholi Highway, formerly known as the Mpiti–Sehlabathebe road, is undergoing additional upgrades as the Chinese construction company Qingjian Group (CNQC) works to reconstruct culverts and build gabions along the 91-kilometer stretch.
In an interview with the Agency, CNQC Assistant Resident Engineer Manager Mr. Keketso Taka explained that the enhancements were initiated by the Roads Directorate, which instructed the company to enlarge the culverts.
“They were deemed too small, causing water to flow over them during heavy rainfall,” said Mr. Taka. “We’re also building gabions to prevent soil and stones from washing onto the road surface.”
The reconstruction work, spanning from Waterfall to Sehlabathebe, began in mid-May 2025 and is scheduled for completion by January 2026.
